Newell Chapel
229 Lamarque Street. Newell Chapel Methodist Church. According to the cornerstones, the church building was rebuilt in 1886, remodeled in 1917, and rebuilt again in 1971.
Chartered in 1869 by the Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, which states "As a place for divine worship...a place for the education of children without any distinction as regards race, color or previous condition." Congregant, Mrs. Regina Gordon was asked in the mid-1970s how so few maintained such a fine building. She is said to have replied, "We gave what we weren't able to give many times. That is what God wants us to do."
Known as Newell Chapel, the origin of the name has been lost in time.
