The Mandeville Police and the Drug Enforcement Agency are hosting a prescription drug take back event on Oct. 26 at the Mandeville Police Department. People can bring their expired, unused and unwanted prescriptions to the department, no questions asked, and authorities will properly dispose the medication.
The program is free and is part of a national effort to prevent pill abuse and theft. According to Mandeville police, prescription drug abuse rates and the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to prescription drugs are high across the country.
Flushing medications down the toilet or throwing them in the trash can pose potential safety and health hazards, Mandeville police said.
People can drop their prescriptions off at the Mandeville Police Department, 1870 U.S. 190, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Oct. 26.
